The Makor Project

The Makor Project is a free online textbook of Jewish history and the history of antisemitism, built from primary sources for K-12 classrooms and college courses. It was built to close a gap: in standard textbooks, the Jewish people appear in the ancient world, then reappear two thousand years later as victims of the Holocaust, a history with no in-between. Read in order, its six units and 57 chapters form a full course, from antiquity to today. Taken singly, each chapter drops into lessons teachers already teach, in world history, US history, civics, and ELA. A full unit covers the Holocaust era, in support of the Holocaust education mandates that roughly twenty-nine states now carry. Every chapter separates primary from secondary sources so students work from the documents themselves. Around the chapters sit teacher guides for grades 6 to 8 and 9 to 12, a K to 5 program, an object museum, virtual field trips, and a sourced timeline. The goal is to put accurate Jewish history in the hands of teachers and students, and to make it a standard part of the curriculum.
